Free Tool Friday - FileZilla

Today’s Free Tool is FileZilla, an FTP management system for your website.

Ok, before your eyes glaze over because you have no clue what I’m talking about let me explain– and I’m no techy geek at all so I’ll explain it to you in the simple terms that I understand it.

Your website will have an FTP address, like mine for StarVA.com is ftp.starva.com.  For years I’ve been just logging into the FTP address for a site and uploading the files that make up my site and that’s how I created and updated my sites.

The other day I couldn’t log into ANY FTP address for three different websites from three different hosts and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  I had heard of FileZilla but figure I didn’t need it since I do things the other way.  Well because I needed to get at a site quick and had no time to figure this FTP issue out I figured I’d try FileZilla…. and it worked!  I could log on and edit / upload the web pages I needed to.

Now that I’ve tried it I will never go back to the old method.  FileZilla rocks!  And it’s free.

What does this mean to you? 

- If you do your own website editing you can use FileZilla to upload files to your website
- If you wanted to offer a free pdf report on your site you could easily use FileZilla to pop the report onto your site
- When you have multiple sites on the go this keeps the login information in the program and does the connecting for you at the click of a button - saving you lots of time.
