All This Talk About Tags & Technorati

I have to admit, until very recently I really didn’t understand all this talk about tagging your blog posts and this thing called Technorati.

I knew it was important but had no idea why or how it was of importance to my blog.

Well with the redesign of this StarVA site and the new blog format, I’ve begun to dive into these things that kinda scared me and have found that’s the best way to learn what they’re about. 

I’ve heard some talk about tags & technorati lately and people asking who’s using it.  Suzanne Falter-Barns asked her readers who using technorati tags in this post, and here’s what I said:

Hi Suzanne,

I just recently got my blogs listed on Technorati and it wasn’t nearly as complicated as it all sounded when anyone tried to explain it to me!

Here is what I did:

1. Go to http://www.technorati.com and sign up for an account.

2. Followed the instructions to add my blog to my account and then copied code to place a ‘add this blog to my technorati favorites’ on my blog

3. Downloaded and Activated the Simple Tags plugin from http://www.broobles.com/scripts/simpletags/ ( I think you can get this from the Wordpress plugins list too)

4. Whenever I make a post I ‘tag’ each one with the keywords that relate to it - When I do this it’s like getting a keyword listed in the search engines - Technorati recognizes that I’ve posted about a specific word or phrase and puts me in the search results when someone searches that word.

Now this is all from what I understand (and like I said I was pretty confused about the whole thing at first) and may not be absolutely and entirely accurate so I’d be happy if someone came along and had more advice. But so far this is Working for me and I have starting seeing some traffic from Technorati :)

Rosalind Gardiner was also asking What’s the Point to Technorati Tags? in her blog post title and she goes on to explain why you should be using the tags.

Since I’ve started using the Technorati tags I have seen some visitors coming in from the site and that can only be a good thing.
